General information about EMG (electromyography) biofeedback training
The eSense Muscle can measure and train electromyographic muscle activity and transmit it to your computer/smartphone/tablet via Bluetooth®.
The eSense Muscle is a powerful tool that can measure and train electromyographic biofeedback of muscle activity, transmitting data to your computer, smartphone, or tablet via Bluetooth® for convenient monitoring.
The musculature of the human body plays an essential role, being the largest energy consumer and accounting for approximately 70-80% of body weight. Muscle contraction generates electrical potential shifts along the fibers of striated muscles, which can be measured at the skin’s surface. This form of measurement, known as surface electromyography, results in an electromyogram, a valuable tool for both performance tracking and biofeedback training.
Transverse striated muscles, controlled by the somatic nervous system, are subject to voluntary control. Every intentional muscle contraction can be captured in an electromyogram. When EMG electrodes are placed on the skin, any increase in muscle tension immediately reflects an enhanced signal in the EMG.
In addition to voluntary actions, involuntary responses like stress, inner tension, and emotional experiences can also be measured through EMG as tonic activity. This makes electromyographic biofeedback a vital method for monitoring and managing both muscular and psychophysiological states. The biofeedback training provided by the eSense Muscle can help individuals improve relaxation, reduce stress-induced muscle tension, and enhance rehabilitation processes.
By observing the interplay between the autonomic and somatic nervous systems, EMG can provide insights into the body’s stress responses. Increased muscle tone often results from heightened sympathetic activity, while decreased muscle tension reflects stronger parasympathetic activation. This balance is key in promoting muscle relaxation and supporting effective rehabilitation.

The EMG signal for Biofeedback Techniques
With EMG, we measure a voltage curve over time, focusing on both the amplitude (the magnitude) of the signal and its frequency. Depending on the neuromuscular structure, significant differences can be observed. For instance, an EMG signal from a small muscle, such as a finger, will have a lower amplitude and frequency compared to the signal from a large thigh muscle. This data is particularly useful in physiotherapy and biofeedback training for tracking muscle performance and recovery.
The eSense Muscle device can measure the raw EMG signal and transmit it via Bluetooth®, along with three preset bandpass signals (RMS) in the frequency ranges:
- 20 Hz to 950 Hz
- 20 Hz to 300 Hz
- 100 Hz to 200 Hz
These frequency ranges can be selected and monitored via the eSense web and mobile apps. In biofeedback training, the bandpass RMS signals are used exclusively, as they are directly related to muscle force and amplitude, which is vital for optimizing neuromuscular control and stimulation during training and rehabilitation. The amplitude typically ranges from a few µV (millionths of a volt) to several hundred µV in particularly strong muscles.
The frequency range of the EMG signal does not play a critical role in EMG biofeedback, but it helps emphasize the signal components you want to observe. EMG activity has a broad frequency spectrum, from 10 Hz to 500 Hz, with a focus between 25-300 Hz. A wide filter (20-950 Hz) captures all EMG components, while a narrow filter (100-200 Hz) isolates key signals, filtering out potential interference like pulse artifacts or electrical noise.
Recent systematic reviews have demonstrated the efficacy of EMG-based biofeedback training for improving neuromuscular function and aiding recovery, particularly in physiotherapy settings. The precise feedback offered by the eSense Muscle makes it an effective tool for enhancing muscle performance and stimulation during rehabilitation.
