Description

General information about EMG (electromyography) biofeedback training

The eSense Muscle is a cutting-edge device that can measure and train electromyographic biofeedback related to muscle activity. It transmits this data to your computer, smartphone, or tablet via Bluetooth® for real-time monitoring and analysis.

The human musculature plays an essential role in the body, not only for movement but also as a major energy consumer, accounting for approximately 70-80% of our body weight. Muscle contraction is reflected by electrical potential shifts along the fibers of striated muscles, which can be measured through surface electromyography (EMG) at the skin’s surface. This non-invasive method captures electrical activity in the form of summation potentials, resulting in an electromyogram.

Our transverse striated muscles, which are responsible for voluntary movements, are controlled by the somatic nervous system. Every intentional muscle contraction is visible in the electromyogram, making it a valuable tool in both training and rehabilitation settings. The device can track not only voluntary actions but also involuntary reactions, such as stress, emotional tension, or psychophysiological states, providing insight into overall muscle tone.

In recent years, EMG biofeedback has been extensively studied, with systematic reviews demonstrating its efficacy in various therapeutic applications. By using electromyographic biofeedback, individuals can gain greater control over their muscle activity, helping to reduce tension and improve muscle coordination. This makes the eSense EMG device ideal for professionals and individuals alike, offering precise biofeedback and ease of use in both clinical and personal settings.

The EMG signal for Biofeedback Techniques

With EMG, we measure a voltage curve over time, paying attention to both the amplitude (the magnitude) and the frequency of the signal. Depending on the musculature, significant differences become apparent. For example, an EMG signal from a small muscle, like a finger, is considerably lower in amplitude and frequency than the signal from a large thigh muscle. This variation is essential in biofeedback training, where understanding muscle activity helps in managing muscle tension and promoting relaxation.

The eSense Muscle EMG Device can measure the raw EMG signal and transmit it via Bluetooth®, offering three preset bandpass signals (RMS) in the following frequency ranges:

  • 20 Hz to 950 Hz
  • 20 Hz to 300 Hz
  • 100 Hz to 200 Hz

These signals can be selected and used through the eSense web app or mobile app. In biofeedback training, we work with the bandpass RMS signals as they are directly related to muscle amplitude and applied force, crucial for tracking muscle activation and relaxation. Amplitude values range from a few µV (millionths of a volt) to several hundred µV in particularly strong muscles, providing valuable data for managing muscle tension and improving range of motion.

The frequency range of the EMG signal plays a lesser role in biofeedback, only emphasizing the specific signal part you want to observe. EMG activity spans a wide frequency spectrum, from approximately 10 Hz to 500 Hz, with a focus between 25-300 Hz. Choosing a wide filter (20-950 Hz) captures all components of the EMG signal, while a narrower filter (100-200 Hz) allows you to isolate key signals and reduce interference such as pulse artifacts or mains hum.

Additionally, for more comprehensive therapy, EMG devices like the eSense Muscle can be paired with electrical stimulation to enhance the recovery process. This combination provides precise biofeedback and stimulation, making the device an excellent tool for both muscle relaxation and targeted biofeedback training.
